Patrick’s
When the southern cooking restaurant Buntyn Café closed its doors, Patrick’s had big shoes to fill. I miss the homemade buttery yeast rolls and fried okra from Buntyn, but Patrick’s mesquite-smoked ribs won me over. So much, that I began including mesquite in my barbecue, a full-flavored wood many pit-masters shy away from using. Check … Continue reading »

Pappy John’s Bar-B-Que in Selmer, TN
At the impressionable age of twelve years old, my family relocated from Memphis to sleepy Selmer, Tennessee, about eighty miles further east. Sleepy as it is, Selmer has both enjoyed and endured it’s own share of national attention from Mary Winlker to the axe handle-wielding Bufford Pusser, portrayed in the movie Walking Tall. But I have fond memories … Continue reading »

Orange Mound Grill
The Orange Mound Grill is a small, but long established soul food “house” right in an Orange Mound neighborhood with neighbors on either side and simple barrel pits in a fenced-in backyard. The house is positioned right next to the underside of an overpass viaduct and literally underneath a giant billboard. The elderly lady behind … Continue reading »

Old Style Bar-B-Q
This country barbecue restaurant began as a Coleman’s BBQ chain, later changing its name to Old Style Bar-B-Q. Both Coleman’s and Old Style are similar to Tops BBQ, which uses the tangy Blue Plate bbq sauce. My family paid a visit after I learned of the country breakfast and bbq restaurant from a restaurant coupon book. We … Continue reading »

J & C Fine Dining-Chicago Style Rib Tips and Fries
Owned and operated by a Chicagoan, J & C Fine Dining offered imperfect, albeit tasty Chicago-style rib tips and fries. This delectable smoked treat is known from the Windy City for the smoked rib tips, but then also the fries, which are used to sop up the meaty juices and sauce left behind from the … Continue reading »

Jack’s Bar-B-Q Rib Shack
Tucked on a backstreet in an older neighborhood along Summer Ave and White Station there once stood a hidden bbq joint with a drive-thru and Tuesday barbecue buffet. You may not have seen Jack’s Bar-B-Q Rib Shack “in lights,” but I had some good ‘que from there. I always heard mixed reviews about Jack’s, both before … Continue reading »

L & L BBQ and Sports Bar
Seldom, and I mean seldom will anyone find a bbq shop in Memphis that stirs bbq sauce throughout the meat, high school cafeteria style. Thankfully, sauce is usually layered onto the meat, allowing for some sauce-covered bites and still some bites of the naked meat, so that the pork can shine in all of its … Continue reading »

L&M Bar-B-Q
For some reason, every restaurant that I’ve seen open at this location on Houston Levee eventually closed. I noticed L & M Bar-B-Q on my way to take the boys to karate and later returned for the ‘que. After this L & M closed, it later became Reggie’s BBQ out of Jackson, TN, which also … Continue reading »

Lucchesi’s-Memphis Italian Deli Makes BBQ Pizza
Lucchesi’s Ravioli & Pasta Co feels like a piece of Little Italy that’s been transplanted from New York City and plopped right down inside of Memphis with their homemade pastas, pizzas and desserts, along with a variety of Italian products and charcuterie. They’re also one of the few places in Memphis to get that wonderfully … Continue reading »

Marlowe’s Ribs & Restaurant
Marlowe’s restaurant and pig trailer are right on Elvis Presley Blvd, just down the street from Graceland. The photos here were taken from an old crappy cell phone camera about six or seven years ago. Check back in the future for a full review. In short, the only thing I liked about the ribs was the … Continue reading »

Mcbride’s Grocery-Real Pit BBQ in a Gas Station
One of the best bbq sandwiches I’ve ever had came from this gas station right on the main street (hwy 64) that runs through Somerville, TN, about forty five minutes from Memphis. McBride’s Grocery is actually inside a Gas Express. There was also another sign that read, The Lil’ Store. Whatever the name, recently passing through I noticed … Continue reading »

Moma’s B-B-Q
Moma’s B-B-Q stands to prove that bbq, barbecue, barbeque, bar-b-q and bar-b-que can be spelled yet one more way. Otherwise, Moma’s in Bartlett is basically like the Memphis chain-Tops BBQ, only, not as smoky. It’s also a sandwich-only place (no ribs). Check back in the future for a full review. If you’d like to read more … Continue reading »

Natural Born Grillers
As a certified bbq judge, I’ve judged Natural Born Grillers as a team at Memphis In May and have been to the restaurant as well at Snowden Grove Park in Southaven, MS, just across the Tennessee state line. The restaurant is closed now, but John Wheeler, the pit-master of NBG created a business partnership and collaboration with Melissa Cookston … Continue reading »

Old Timers
The first time I had ribs from Old Timers, was actually not at the restaurant in Millington, TN. A friend and collegue brought me a few bones to work in a Styrofoam box. Smoke flavor was perfect. The meat was redolent with wood smoke, despite their brief vacation in the fridge. No apparent loss of moisture or bark either. … Continue reading »
